Should Lomachenko Make A Return?

Vasiliy Lomachenko has said no to a boxing return, effectively ending speculation about a fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Lomachenko, now 37, announced his retirement in June 2024, just over a year after securing a victory over George Kambosos Jr. that saw him become the IBF Lightweight Champion. Loma’s career was driven by one singular objective: achieving undisputed status. However, that dream was cut short when he suffered a controversial unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney in May 2023, though many observers felt Lomachenko deserved the nod. Speaking at a recent WBO convention in Colombia, Lomachenko was blunt about his decision to walk away. He cited no motivation as being a primary factor.
Lomachenko Returns
“I’m thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I’ve gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve victory. My father not only taught me the art of boxing but how to be a role model for my own children – the same way he has always been for me. I’ve made many mistakes in life, and in the gym, but he has always been by my side. It was not difficult because I lost my motivation. It makes no sense talking about this because I’m finished with boxing,” Loma said
By retiring after a decisive win over George Kambosos Jr. in 2024 to win the IBF title, Lomachenko walks away on a high note, with his legacy completely intact. He avoids being stopped or clearly beaten due to age, a fate that has befallen other fighters. Had he accepted a mega-fight with Gervonta Davis or Shakur Stevenson and lost badly, his standing would be diminished.
Despite his age, Lomachenko showed he was still performing at an elite level against Kambosos. Retirement means the sport will miss out on big and unique fights. Furthermore, the loss to Haney remains an unaddressed controversy, which often fuels demand for rematches. The speculation linking him to an exhibition or professional fight with Manny Pacquiao highlighted the financial opportunity he is walking away from.
